Photos build a child’s esteem
Photos build a child’s esteem
Did you know that having photos of your family displayed builds your child’s esteem? No neither did I.
Photos we tend to take are of happy times, holidays, families. Children relate to the memories of the images and see how they fit into the circle of the family.
Scientific research to prove it
Scientific research has found that when children can see their images displayed, through various times in their lives, it helps gives them a sense of belonging to your tribe.
Professor Geoff Beattie, Dean of Psychological Sciences at the University of Manchester, says, “For children, in particular, looking at photographs is part of the socializing process, learning who you are and where you fit into the family. By displaying photographs of our children at different stages of their lives, we are making a very public statement that we are proud of them.”
Why have we stopped displaying family photos?
A stat that shocked me was years ago 78% of houses had between 1-15 images of their families on the walls or displayed. Now with mobile phones that number had dwindled. Is this linked to child esteem being lower than ever? Would you not want to display your memories keep them alive? What would happen if you lost or had your mobile stolen – do you have them backed up? Why do you not print them?
Have you ever come across an old black and white image of maybe grandparents’ wedding or even great-grandparents? I wonder what times were like for them? Dressed in their finery for a photo usually in a studio setting. Even for weddings years ago, the photos are taken in a studio after the ceremony. How lucky are we that we can almost document anything and everything with our mobile?
But don’t let it just be a digital memory? I have one client, that every year sends me her photos from her phone and together we build a beautiful hand-crafted book of her memories. How’s that for a great way to preserve your memories?
That’s why I take families and children…
